School of Business, IPB University, Bogor, Indonesia

1. Accreditation Comprehensive Review

Evaluation:

“ABEST21 certifies that the School’s educational and research activities generally satisfy accreditation standards. The School’s Kaizen plans are good and quality maintenance and prospects for the improvement of education and research are promising and good. Accreditation commences April 1, 2021 for a five-year period.”

PRT Comments:

The Business School of IPB is well established with more than adequate facilities, talented and qualified staff, and strategic location close to Jakarta that makes it an ideal place for students to continue their education. The university and faculty have a strong commitment to achieving their mission. For example, the university and faculty allocated quite a significant amount of resources for the research activities. The faculty members and infrastructure are sufficient to support the high-quality learning process, and there is also a system to encourage the involvement of all lecturers. In general, the governance system is already sufficient.
In addition, IPB has only three Postgraduate programs, and this allows them to focus their attention on enhancing the quality of these programs. Their approach to recruit quality students among undergraduates is also commendable, since it helps to create a pool of quality applicants for the School.

However, there is still room for improvement or a need for more explanations. Specifically, the School needs to address the following items:

  • The School needs to explain how it differentiates between FEM and SB IPB in terms of curriculum, research, intellectual contribution, admissions, student profile and selection process.
  • The School needs to develop a systematic process of AOL: develop measurement tools, and measure the performance of LG/LO per study program. Based on that, the School can propose improvements of courses etc.
  • The School should show how it evaluates online classes, attendance rates of the students and standards of students’ performance.
  • Global issues: the School needs to increase the diversity of its staff and students, and put more efforts into increasing its internationalization and globalization. They can achieve this by increasing the number of international staff and students via developing an international program, organizing international students’ recruitment, establishing English class and language class for foreign students, having more student exchange programs, more collaborations with local and global universities, as well as conducting their programs online and in English so that international students can register for their courses.
  • The School should review its system for student support. This system is not only about scholarship, but also about academic and professional training and job placement.
  • The School needs to change its educational management system to utilize digital technologies, e.g. establish online courses and digital library, and provide Wi-Fi service throughout the university area.
  • Academic staff members need to have their own personal offices rather than share with others for better work performance and privacy, especially when they have discussions with students.
  • The School can also introduce integrated case study at the master’s level using local cases done by the doctoral students on actual situations in their respective organizations.
  • The School can assist in seeking research funding for academic staff.
2. Good Practice in the Program Management Education

[School of Business]

Title:

“Nurturing socio-technopreneurs through applied and industry-based knowledge of business management in agricultural entrepreneurship”

Reasons:

The School nurtures graduates who are knowledgeable in the area of business management for the agriculture industry as well as entrepreneurs who are aware of the problems of society. The creative hub within the School can co-create stakeholders to nurture the socio-technopreneurs. The School achieves this by providing hands-on experiences that focuses the School’s programs on applied and industry-based knowledge. The School’s faculty members’ industrial experience also supports this practice.

3. Matters to be noted

PRT Comprehensive Comments:

As mentioned previously, the School needs further internationalization. This can be done by enhancing the diversity of faculty and students by increasing the number of international faculty members and aggressive promotion activities to attract more international students to the postgraduate program.
The School can introduce more online learning to attract more international students as well as assist local students who are unable to physically attend classes due to the pandemic. New facilities may have to be developed, e.g. recording studios for faculty members, and staff (academic, administrative, and technical) who are proficient in English.
Students have mentioned that they are interested to be entrepreneurs. Therefore, it will be good if the School could collaborate with other Faculties and Schools within the University to create an ecosystem to nurture entrepreneurs. New infrastructure such as accommodation for international students and visiting staff may also need to be provided.
In addition, to help with furthering the development of academic staff, sabbatical leave should be implemented and increase research grants. The School should also consider building good networks and collaborations with alumni and establish more cooperated activities in order to leveraging the quality of education.
